Mother Art consisted of eight artists at various times. It was officially active from 1973 to 1987. The focus of the group was feminist art.
As mothers and artists, Mother Art applied a particular filter to the issues we confronted, such as reproductive rights. We saw our work as an opportunity to communicate with the public outside the art world, which we did with performance, installation, posters, and murals, often exhibiting outside a gallery context in non-traditional spaces, such as a parking garage, or an abandoned industrial building. I was a member of Mother Art from 1981 to 1987. After 2007, Mother Art was invited to participate in several exhibitions re- examining the legacy of feminist art. At this point the active participants were Deborah Krall, Suzanne Siegel, and Laura Silagi. The three of us created an installation ”Doin It In Public” at Otis College. We also collaborated on a book, “MOTHER ART, A Collective of Women Artists”, and a half hour documentary “Mother Art Tells Her Story.”
